San Diego Soccer Club Girls U12 Navy, coached by Pete Stogsdill and Steve Camara, had their 2015-16 season end with a quarter-finalist placing at the Far West Regionals (FWR) in Arvada, Colorado this past week. After a successful league season together the girls qualified for a wild card spot in FWR based on their finish in the California Regional League this past year.
This talented group of girls swept through bracket play last week, easily winning all three of their group games. They opened at the Far West Regionals with a convincing 2-0 win over arch-rival SD Surf, Cal South’s reigning National Cup Champions. The girls continued their winning streak on Wednesday, beating PAC-NW from Washington State 3-0. Their final game in group play ended with a 1-0 win over the state champions of Nevada, LVPSA.
Early Friday morning they played Scottsdale Blackhawks, the current Arizona State Champions. SDSC held 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the game and had a couple of chances to go up 3-1 with about ten minutes left in the match. However, they were not able to capitalize and the AZ team scored a goal with about five minutes to play to send the game into over-time. After an intense battle in overtime in which both teams failed to find the back of the net the game proceeded to penalty kicks. Heartbreakingly, the champs from Arizona won the match in PK’s. The Scottsdale Blackhawks went on to win the Far West Regional Championship 3-0 yesterday in the final match against LVPSA Nevada.
Although not the ending the team wished for it was a fantastic week of soccer and bonding for this young group of SDSC girls. They worked tirelessly for the last eight weeks in preparation for the tournament. They practiced as a team four days a week with additional work off the field to make sure they were as prepared as possible to play at altitude. Congratulations to this incredible group of girls; Julia Walsh, Kyla Christofferson, Brooke Gierczak, Cassidy Camara, Mackenzie Cunningham, Mackenzie Camara, Sophia Vivar, Megan Fuson, Elise Jabbour, Cassie Koyamatsu, Jacey Farmer, Trinity Coker, Emily Brown and Victoria Nguyen. We’re honored you all choose to wear blue and orange and look forward to your bright futures with SDSC.
